Justin Bobby for Smooth Co.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a HUGE fan of The Hills. I've been watching the show since the begining of the Laguna days. So when I had the chance to meet Justin Bobby last week at a fashion event...I was beyond excited.

A new clothing line called Smooth Co. http://www.thesmoothcompany.com/ launched here in Vancouver and Justin Bobby from The Hills is the face of the brand. The event was held at high end retailer Holt Renfrew. Lots of fashion people from Vancouver were there but I wasn't interested in seeing any of them. I was interested in seeing JB!
When we walked into the party, I saw him right away. I was a little surprised because he kinda looked like a scrub. He wasn't dressed very well and he looked really tired. I didn't go upto him until towards the end of the night. I was talking to one of my friends and I was looking around and then all of sudden I see him and he looks right at me. He gives me a huge smile and next thing I know I walk over to him and we're talking away. He was SUPER nice...totally not what I expected. He said he thought Vancouver was a beautiful city. He seemed totally chill and easy going. So Justin Bobby did not disappoint. I'm glad I got to meet him. And I even got a few pics with him.

Product Review - L'Oreal Lash Serum & Shiseido Facial Cotton Pads

L'Oreal Lash Boosting Serum $17 CAD
This is a Lash boosting Serum containing Centella Asiatica Extract and Arginine to reinforce, condition and protect your lashes.
I've been using this Lash Serum for just over a month and I've already noticed a difference in the strength of my lashes. The major thing I noticed is that usually when I remove my makeup, I lose a lot of lashes but since I started using the serum I barely lose any lashes at all. My lashes look fuller and feel stronger overall. I use the serum twice a day - once in the morning under my mascara and then again at night before I go to bed. Its very easy to apply. This is a great affordable product that helps improve and protect your lashes.

Shiseido Facial Cotton Pads $8 CAD
Made from 100% natural cotton, these facial cotton pads are great for removing your makeup or applying toners or creams on your face. These are the softest pads I've ever used, way softer than your typical drug store brand. They have a very smooth texture and they're super gentle on your skin especially for the area around your eyes. This is a quality product. It holds well together and doesn't shred or fall apart. It doesn't leave any cotton your face. You can use both sides of the pad and they don't soak up product. They come in a pack of 60 which will last you for a long time. They are a little bit pricey but totally worth it. Once you try them, you'll never go back to dry scratchy cotton pads again!!

The Classic Winged Liner

You've tried and tried again but you just can't seem to get that winged liner done right. Well, check out this great article below I found explaning how to get that perfect winged liner every time.

Products Required
When it comes to winged liner, there are a variety of products you can choose from. Gel liner, cake eyeliner, liquid liner and water proof eye pencils are some of your choices. All of these products have amazing staying power.

Tools Required
Having brushes in great condition is the key to creating a well defined, ultra sleek wing. You can opt to use a flat liner brush, angled liner brush, or a pointed liquid liner brush. Keep a few cotton swabs on hand to help you clean up around the edges of the wing.

Technique

1. Start off by dabbing a little primer onto the lid and then add an eye base. Follow this with translucent powder to set your eye base and add a nude eye shadow over the entire eye lid.

2. Push or draw your liner into the roots of your lashes which will create a thin eyeliner close to the lash line.

3. Next, start at the outer corner of the eye area pulling your brush or pencil along the lash line towards the nose. Hold your eye at the outer corner of your brow bone to tighten the skin. Do not pull at the outer corner. Thicken the liner at the outer corner and blend it into the rest of the liner as you work towards the center of the eyelid.

4. Next, you are creating your wing. Work your product from the center of the eyeliner along the base of the lash line and pull it out to where you would like the liner to stop. By easing the pressure of your brush as you approach the end of the wing you will avoid thickness and a squared edge and will create a fine tip instead. Working outwards will give the liner an upward swing and lift the corner of the eye. For a more dramatic liner connect the tip of the wing downwards to the outer corner of the upper lash line.

Have fun trying it out!!

Jeanne Becker and Olympic excitement Vancouver 2010

The other day I had the pleasure of meeting Jeanne Becker. Jeanne is the host of Fashion Television and was one of the judges on Canada's Next Top Model. I've been watching her for years so meeting her was a really cool experience. She was in Vancouver for all the exciting events happening around the city during the 2010 Olympics. She interviewed the president of The Hudson's Bay Company, Bonnie Brooks. She also intereviewed Dean & Dan from Dsquared at their appearance at Holt Renfrew for the launch of their line of Canadian Olympic apparel. When I met Jeanne, I was very tempted to ask her thoughts on Alexander McQueen but decided not to because I wasnt sure if it would be appropriate. She was super friendly and sweet and it was great seeing her on the west coast for a change.

Your Questions Answered - How to become a Makeup Artist

Hi Eman,
First off I'd like to say your videos and tutorials are great. I'm 18 and living in Calgary Alberta. All my life I've wanted to become a makeup artist. I'm hoping to go to a school here called Artists Within. I was wondering if you could give me any advice towards becoming a makeup artist? Also, what school did you attend before you became a makeup artist? Any tips or insight would help me greatly...

Thank you for your email. I'm glad you are enjoying my video tutorials!I got into makeup kind of on a whim. I was really into fashion and it then turned to makeup. I started to learn and practice a lot on my own. And then I decided to go to school. I did a one year program and got my makeup artistry certificate.
I did a lot of volunteer (free) work at first to get experience then I started getting paid work. Building your portfolio is the most important thing. Its what represents you and your work. The better your portfolio, the more work you will get.

Here's some advice and tips:
Do makeup as much as you can,be creative - don't be afraid to try new things, read and research about makeup, styles, brands, techniques - never stop learning.
Network, network, network! Meet as many people as you can in the industry. That's how you'll get jobs and build a clientele. Remember that being a makeup artist is a business.

Well I hope this was helpful :) Good luck with everything!

Gaga for Natalie

I think there's a little bit of Gaga in all of us. In a shoot I did recently, we wanted to bring out the Gaga in our model Natalie. Photographer Tiffany Alzono http://www.tiffanyalonzo.com/
and her assistant Jill did an amazing job at styling the shoot. She captured the softer side of gaga and the crazier side.

For makeup and hair - I started with a softer look, perfecting the models skin and defining her features. The look worked well with the softer lighting and background. The second look I did a strong black cupid lip with lots of liner to define the models eyes. I went with stronger makeup so it can stand out against the accessories we used in the shots.

Check out some of the images from the shoot below:
